Koivu no longer an option

Saku Koviu is off the Rangers radar.  The 34 year old center signed a one year deal today with the Anaheim Ducks.

If the Rangers are unable to swing a trade for a center that would mean either Chris Drury and Brandon Dubinsky would take the number one center spot.  Dubinsky has shown he’s capable of being a number one before with Jaromir Jagr.  Playing with Marion Gaborik, who doesn’t need as much of a supporting cast as Jagr did, may help to further develop Dubinsky into a top line player.  He would have a lot more freedom to play his own game as opposed to having to change his style to fit the talent that’s on his wing.  Drury would be better suited for the second line center role which he is familiar with and where the spotlight wouldn’t be on him as much.  He’d be able to lead the team quietly, the way he is used to.

The Rangers also announced today that the club agreed to terms with RFA Brian Boyle, who was acquired from the L.A. Kings for a 2010 third round pick.
